Monica Tunstle-Garrett - Syphilis Elimination Supervisor, Dallas County Health & Human Services

I received a Bachelors of Science Degree in Community Health Education in 1990.  I have worked in the HIV/STD field for 10 years.  I was trained and worked as a (DIS) Disease Intervention Specialist for the Dallas Health Department as early as 1997, where I am now a First Line Supervisor for the Syphilis Elimination Team and the Jail Team. I am a certified HIV/STD educator, where I obtained my certification through the American Red Cross.  To keep my certification up to date, I volunteer by teaching a class quarterly.

I supervise a team of 6 employees (4) County Employees and (2) Federal Employees (RRT members).  I am responsible for the daily operations and functions of supervising my team members so that they successfully work Field Records, Interview Syphilis/HIV cases and conduct Field Outreach.  I also supervise the operations of our Medical Mobile Clinic, which is designed to conduct Syphilis/HIV testing and education prevention in the community.

I am the Syphilis Elimination Coalition Coordinator for the Dallas area.  I have organized a community coalition that is designed and created to brainstorm ideas to Eliminate Syphilis. The coalition is comprised of (CBO's) Community Based Organizations, Dallas residents, civic and political leaders.  The coalition is a working committee, where I have also assisted in the development of a (PSA) Public Service Announcement that is aired on TXA-21 for the awareness and education of testing.
